Cultivation water cost is more than gallons.

How to connect source water, treatment, irrigation, reject, runoff, condensate, discharge, sewer billing, measurement, and conservation economics.

Cultivation water cost is more than the number of gallons on a utility bill. The facility may pay to purchase, treat, store, pump, heat, cool, distribute, discharge, and manage the same volume. Sewer charges may follow a different formula than water, and the billing method may not reflect where every gallon actually went.

A useful review begins with two maps: the physical water path and the billing path. The opportunity appears where the maps do not match, where measurement is missing, or where a process consumes more cost than cultivation value.

Map water from source to outcome

The relevant streams can include:

  • Municipal, well, delivered, or reclaimed source water
  • Filtration, softening, reverse osmosis, and storage
  • Product water and RO reject
  • Irrigation, fertigation, runoff, and drainage
  • Humidification, cooling, and dehumidifier or HVAC condensate
  • Sanitation, washdown, equipment, and support uses
  • Leaks, overflow, alarms, and unmeasured losses
  • Reuse, capture, treatment, and final discharge

Not every facility has every stream. The objective is to identify which paths exist and which are measured.

Water and sewer are separate financial questions

A water bill may use the incoming meter. A sewer bill may use the same volume, a seasonal average, a separate meter, a discharge factor, a fixed formula, a special classification, or another method. Current provider rules control.

Water that becomes plant material, evaporates, leaves through regulated waste, is captured as condensate, or is reused may not follow the same path as sanitary discharge. That physical fact does not automatically create a billing adjustment, but it can justify reviewing the applicable sewer methodology and measurement requirements.

Do not assume: neither "all purchased water reaches the sewer" nor "cultivation water is exempt from sewer" is a safe general rule. The provider, account, measurement, and current billing requirements must be confirmed.

Build a defensible water balance

A water balance reconciles source volume with known outcomes. It can be built from utility meters, treatment controller data, tank records, batch logs, irrigation recipes, submeters, flow tests, equipment specifications, and temporary measurement.

The first balance may contain an unreconciled category. That is useful. It shows where better measurement, leak testing, operating review, or assumptions are needed.

  • Source water purchased or produced
  • RO product and reject
  • Irrigation delivered
  • Runoff, drain, and capture
  • Sanitation and process use
  • Condensate and recovered water
  • Known discharge
  • Unreconciled volume

Calculate total cost, not only water price

The marginal cost of a gallon can include water, sewer, treatment energy, filters and membranes, chemicals, pumping, heating or cooling, labor, maintenance, waste handling, storage, and capacity. Avoided water may not avoid every fixed charge, and a reuse project may add treatment and operating cost.

A project model should identify which cost components actually change. A gallon reduction is not automatically equal to the combined water and sewer rate.

Common opportunity categories

Billing and classification

Review meter identity, read history, service size, fixed charges, tiers, sewer basis, account class, estimates, and unexplained adjustments.

Leak and overflow control

Investigate tank overflow, stuck valves, irrigation leaks, unnoticed drains, failed floats, alarms, and continuous low-level flow.

RO and treatment performance

Measure recovery ratio, pressure, membrane condition, flush cycles, source quality, and reject flow. Compare the actual system with design assumptions.

Irrigation and runoff

Review batch size, emitter performance, room stage, runoff targets, drainage, capture, and measurement without compromising cultivation strategy.

Condensate and reuse

Evaluate volume, quality, storage, treatment, intended use, seasonality, risk, and economics. Technical availability does not guarantee suitability.

Sewer treatment and measurement

Confirm how the provider calculates sewer and what evidence, meters, applications, or continuing conditions are required for any alternative treatment.

Prioritize action in the right order

  1. Confirm the bill and account method.
  2. Reconcile the physical water balance.
  3. Correct leaks, controls, overflow, and maintenance.
  4. Improve measurement where it changes a decision.
  5. Evaluate reuse or capital projects with total-cost economics.
  6. Verify the realized volume, bill, and operating result.

The strongest cultivation water strategy makes the physical flow, utility bill, operating requirement, and financial model agree. Where they do not, the difference should be measured and explained.
